Can You Install PVC Beadboard Over Bathroom Tile?

PVC Beadboard makes a great alternative to outdated tile.

Can you install PVC beadboard over existing tile? Can you install PVC beadboard in a bathroom’s tub surround or shower? You bet! These are two common questions that we are frequently asked.

PVC beadboard isn’t just for basements, mud rooms and laundry rooms. It makes a contemporary alternative to traditional materials in wet areas too. Not only do you get the quaint, cottage look; you also get the advantage of using a waterproof material.

PVC beadboard is an ideal wall covering for bathrooms. You may be fond of the pink or green ceramic look, but consider this. Here are some advantages of replacing the dated tile in your bathroom with PVC beadboard:

  • waterproof
  • does not promote the growth of mold/mildew
  • easy to clean – low maintenance
  • white through-and-through
  • pre-finished
  • may be painted
  • simple tongue-and-groove assembly

Installation of PVC millwork is easy too.  Follow these simple tips for a successful project:

  1. Choose a premium construction adhesive. Ensure that it is formulated for use on both PVC and ceramic tile.
  2. Apply construction adhesive to the backside of the planks. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Assemble the PVC beadboard. Push the tongue of each board into the groove of the adjoining board.
  4. Apply PVC moulding to the face of the planks.
  5. Install a wainscoting cap that covers the chair rail, beadboard and gap left by the tile.
  6. Apply paintable, mold and mildew resistant caulking to all seams and joints.
  7. When installing the beadboard in a shower or tub surround, seal all joints and seams. Apply caulking to the groove of each plank prior to assembly.

Note: Before beginning your project, be sure to check your local building codes. You’ll also want to ensure that the existing bathroom tile is in good condition… make sure there are no loose pieces prior to applying wall covering over it. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for caulking and construction adhesive.
