PVC Makes a Low Maintenance Option for Millwork

Tips for cleaning PVC Beadboard and Moulding

PVC (also referred to as Vinyl) outperforms traditional materials. It makes a great, low maintenance option for beadboard paneling, moulding and other trimwork. The extruded profile is smooth, not milled, and easy to keep clean. As with all trimwork, you are bound to get the occasional filth or stain. Here are a few ideas to keep your PVC beadboard and moulding looking new.

  • Dust: Maintain a fresh, clean look by briefly dusting your millwork from time to time.
  • Dirt & Grime: Lift dirt or grime from the surface of PVC trimwork using a mild soap and water. Add a little bleach to the mixture for extra cleaning power.
  • Soap Scum & Hard Water Deposits: Commercial cleaners such as Soft Scrub® Total All Purpose are formulated for what your millwork will pick up in a kitchen or bathroom.
  • Scuff Marks, Grass Stains & Felt-tip pen: Foyer and hallway millwork encounters marks not as easily removed. Try using Mr. Clean Magic Erasers®. Original. These pads are great scrubbers that do not mar the surface.
  • Adhesive, Crayon & Bubble Gum: Beadboard sure looks great in your child’s room, but kids often add their own touch… citrus cleaners such as Goo Gone effortlessly remove anything from wax and sticker adhesive.
  • Revitalize: Restore and revitalize your beadboard paneling and trimwork using wipes like DeckMAX PVC Revitalizing Wipes formulated to enhance UV protection and improve stain resistance.

A soft rag will do the trick in cleaning most films and stains. You can use a soft bristle brush for added elbow grease on more difficult marks. If you don’t have the cleaners listed above, consider some other readily available household cleaners:

  • fantastik®
  • Lestoil® Heavy Duty Multi-Purpose Cleaner
  • Windex®
  • Endust®
  • Shout
  • Formula 409®
  • Bond&Fill® POWER™ Cleaner

NOTE: These tips are fore extruded PVC trimwork. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions before using any cleaner. Be sure to check for precautions against the use on PVC. Do not use If PVC, vinyl or plastic is not listed as a recommended surface. Never use an abrasive cleaner.

As with any new product, try the cleaner in an inconspicuous area before cleaning the vinyl. If you are painting your beadboard paneling or moulding, be sure to follow the paint manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance and cleaning instructions.
